President Donald Trump on Tuesday, September 2, released dramatic footage showing the U.S. military destroying a small vessel off the coast of Venezuela. The boat, allegedly carrying narcotics and members of the Tren de Aragua gang, was obliterated by a missile strike in international waters. The explosion killed all those on board.
According to Trump, the vessel was transporting 11 “Tren de Aragua narcoterrorists” who were attempting to reach the United States.
Trump’s Statement
“Earlier this morning, on my orders, U.S. Military Forces conducted a kinetic strike against positively identified Tren de Aragua narcoterrorists in the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, where he shared the footage.
He described Tren de Aragua (TDA) as a designated foreign terrorist organization “operating under the control of Nicolas Maduro, responsible for mass murder, drug trafficking, sex trafficking, and acts of violence and terror across the United States and the Western Hemisphere.”
Trump said the strike occurred while the suspects were at sea in international waters, transporting narcotics bound for the U.S. “The strike resulted in 11 terrorists killed in action. No U.S. Forces were harmed in this strike,” he stated. He further warned: “Please let this serve as notice to anybody even thinking about bringing drugs into the United States of America. BEWARE!”
Background
This marks the first publicly known strike on a cartel since Trump authorized the military to target such organizations earlier this year, according to the New York Post. The Caribbean region is a key route for cocaine shipments, though it remains unclear what type of narcotics the destroyed vessel was carrying
