Gonda, Uttar Pradesh – A woman in Gonda district has accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and alleged that her husband secretly married another woman within weeks of their wedding. Police confirmed that a case has been registered against seven people, including the husband, under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
According to officials, the complainant, Savita Pathak, a resident of Khajuri village, married Ranjit Tiwari on June 2 this year. In her statement, she alleged that soon after the marriage, her husband, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and two other relatives began demanding a dowry of ₹1 lakh in cash and a motorcycle. She further claimed that her husband developed a relationship with a woman from a village under Chhapia police station limits and, on June 27, eloped with her. Savita alleged that, with the support of his family, Ranjit went on to marry the other woman in secret.
When she protested against the alleged second marriage, Savita said she was abused, threatened, and taunted for not fulfilling dowry demands. She also claimed that despite approaching the police on August 31 with her family, no action was taken at that time. Chhapia Station House Officer Ram Samujh Prabhakar told PTI that, acting on the directions of the superintendent of police, a case has now been formally registered against Ranjit Tiwari and six of his family members. Authorities said that an investigation is underway, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.
