New Delhi/Washington, October 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that he received a phone call from U.S. President Donald Trump, who extended warm Diwali greetings to the people of India. During the conversation, both leaders reaffirmed their shared resolve to stand united against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
Expressing his gratitude, Prime Minister Modi noted that India and the United States, as “two great democracies,” would continue to “illuminate the world with hope, unity, and peace,” working together to combat global terrorism and uphold democratic values.
President Trump, in his remarks at a Diwali celebration held at the White House, described Prime Minister Modi as a “great person” and a “true friend,” while highlighting the enduring strength of the U.S.–India partnership.
“Let me extend our warmest wishes to the people of India. I just spoke to your Prime Minister today — we had a great conversation. We discussed trade, peace, and stability in the region. I told him, let’s have no wars with Pakistan — and it’s a very good thing that we have peace. He’s a remarkable leader and has become a great friend of mine over the years,” President Trump said.
Reflecting on the festival’s spiritual essence, President Trump added,
“In a few moments, we will light the diya as a symbol of our faith — the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. During Diwali, people celebrate ancient stories of enemies defeated, obstacles removed, and freedom regained. The flame of the diya reminds us to seek wisdom, work with diligence, and give thanks for our many blessings.”
Following his remarks, President Trump lit ceremonial diyas to mark the occasion. The White House event was attended by senior members of his administration, including FBI Director Kash Patel, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai, India’s Ambassador to the U.S. Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor.
A delegation of prominent Indian-American business leaders also participated in the celebration, reflecting the growing influence of the Indian diaspora in fostering closer ties between the two nations. The event underscored the cultural significance of Diwali in the United States and highlighted the enduring friendship and shared democratic values that continue to strengthen the U.S.–India relationship.
