Veteran actor Satish Shah, celebrated for his roles in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, passed away on Saturday at the age of 74. Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news on Instagram, revealing that Shah succumbed to kidney failure.
According to Pandit, Shah’s health deteriorated suddenly at his residence, prompting his immediate admission to Hinduja Hospital, where he breathed his last. Commenting on the loss, Pandit described it as “a huge loss to our film and television industry.” In his social media post, he wrote:
“Sad and shocked to inform you that our dear friend and a great actor Satish Shah has expired a few hours ago due to kidney failure. He was rushed to Hinduja Hospital where he breathed his last. A great loss to our industry. Om Shanti.”
Reports indicate that Shah had been battling kidney-related complications and had recently undergone a transplant. His manager confirmed that his body remains at the hospital, and funeral rites are scheduled for Sunday.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Satish Shah became a household name in Indian cinema and television, renowned for his versatility and comic timing. He pursued his education at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, before honing his craft at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. Shah made his acting debut with Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan (1978) and went on to feature in over 250 films.
He achieved cult status with his performance as Municipal Commissioner D’Mello in the 1983 classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, directed by Kundan Shah. His extensive filmography also includes notable films such as Shakti, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Main Hoon Na, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Fanaa, and Om Shanti Om.
On the small screen, Shah is fondly remembered for his portrayal of Indravadan Sarabhai in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, widely regarded as one of Indian television’s most iconic comic performances.
Satish Shah is survived by his wife, Madhu Shah. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian cinema and television, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances that continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
