Techie and Police Officer Arrested in Maharashtra Doctor’s Suicide and Rape Case

Satara (Maharashtra): In a disturbing development linked to the alleged rape and abetment of suicide of a 28-year-old woman doctor employed at Phaltan Subdistrict Hospital, Satara police have arrested a software engineer and a police sub-inspector.

According to investigators, the doctor reportedly ended her life after a prolonged period of emotional distress, allegedly involving the two accused — identified as PSI Badane and techie Prashant Bankar. Police said the doctor had been pressuring Bankar to marry her and maintain a physical relationship, a claim supported by messages and call records currently under forensic examination.

A suicide note written on her palm reportedly named both men as responsible for her death. The police have registered a case under Sections 64 (rape) and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Techie’s Family Denies Arrest Reports

Contrary to earlier media reports that Bankar was arrested from a farmhouse near Pune, his family clarified that he surrendered voluntarily at their home in Phaltan. “We told him to surrender. His social media data and call records have been handed over to police. My brother never called the doctor — she contacted him repeatedly,” his brother told The Times of India.

Police sources confirmed that the deceased doctor had been living with Bankar’s family for nearly a year, paying a monthly rent of ₹4,000. According to Bankar’s younger sister, the two first met when the doctor treated him for dengue last month. “They exchanged numbers, and about two weeks ago, she proposed marriage, which he declined. During Diwali, she appeared tense, but we assumed it was due to work. She was like family to us,” she said.

Police Probe Digital Evidence

Investigators have retrieved a large volume of chat logs and voice recordings between the doctor and the techie, indicating frequent communication and emotional exchanges. “Preliminary evidence shows the doctor expressing stress and pressure in multiple conversations,” a police official stated.

A senior officer added that PSI Badane, who also hails from Beed district like the deceased, surrendered voluntarily. Both the sub-inspector and Bankar are accused of contributing to the circumstances that led the young doctor to take her life.

Bankar has been remanded to four days of police custody, until October 28. Authorities are examining digital and forensic material to establish the authenticity of the evidence and to determine whether elements of blackmail or coercion were involved.

“A woman has lost her life, and there may be substance to her allegations,” said senior officer Doshi. “This is a sensitive and complex case, especially since she had never filed any formal complaint earlier. We are verifying every aspect carefully.”

The investigation remains ongoing, with digital data, witness statements, and forensic findings under detailed scrutiny.
