During a press conference where he claimed that nearly 2.5 million votes were "stolen" in the recent Haryana Assembly elections, Gandhi screened a video clip of B. Gopalakrishnan, the Vice President of the BJP's Kerala unit.
The Congress leader first stated that thousands of people, including BJP leaders, were registered as voters in both Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. He then showed the video clip of Gopalakrishnan's remarks to the media on August 22, in a move that captured the nation's attention.
The footage allegedly showed Gopalakrishnan admitting to deliberately adding voters from outside the constituency to secure electoral victories.
"We widely add votes to win. In constituencies where we intend to win, we bring people from places like Jammu and Kashmir, house them for a year, and have them cast their votes. There is no doubt about it. We will do it tomorrow too," Gopalakrishnan was quoted as saying in the video.
This public statement by Gopalakrishnan had initially surfaced when the BJP's victory in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency by Suresh Gopi was facing allegations of being secured through fraudulent voting, specifically by registering people from outside the constituency with fake addresses.
Rahul Gandhi leveraged this existing controversy to support his broader claim of systemic electoral malpractice by the BJP in North Indian states like Haryana.
