New Delhi, November 5: In a major step toward modernizing travel documentation, the Government of India has officially introduced electronic passports (e-passports) to strengthen security, accelerate immigration procedures, and align with global travel standards. The initiative represents a significant leap toward a technology-driven travel experience for Indian citizens.
What is an E-Passport?
An e-passport appears nearly identical to a traditional Indian passport but features a small embedded electronic chip within its back cover. This chip securely stores the holder’s personal and biometric data — including fingerprints, facial recognition information, and a digital signature.
The advanced encryption technology ensures that the data printed on the passport matches the information stored on the chip, making counterfeiting or data tampering virtually impossible.
E-passports can be easily identified by a gold-colored symbol on the cover. At airports and immigration checkpoints, officers can scan the chip to instantly verify the traveller’s identity, reducing queues and enhancing overall efficiency and security.
Who Can Apply for an E-Passport?
Any Indian citizen eligible for a regular passport can apply for an e-passport. Currently, the facility is available at select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) across the country.
Applicants are advised to verify whether their local passport office has begun issuing e-passports before applying. The government plans to expand this service nationwide in phases, eventually making e-passports available for both new applicants and renewals.
How to Apply for an E-Passport
The application process for an e-passport remains the same as for a regular passport:
-
Register on the official Passport Seva Portal.
- Complete the online application form and pay the applicable fee.
- Schedule an appointment at your nearest PSK or POPSK.
- Visit the passport office for biometric data collection, including fingerprints and photographs.
- Once processed, the e-passport — embedded with the electronic chip — will be printed and delivered to your registered address.
Key Benefits of E-Passports
E-passports bring multiple advantages for travellers and authorities alike, including:
- Enhanced Security: Strong protection against forgery and identity theft through encrypted biometric data.
- Faster Immigration: Reduced waiting times at airports due to automated verification systems.
- Global Acceptance: Improved international recognition and compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
- Data Integrity: Ensures that personal information remains authentic, secure, and tamper-proof.
As the rollout progresses, Indian citizens are encouraged to check the availability of the e-passport facility at their nearest passport office and take advantage of this secure and efficient travel document — a milestone in India’s digital governance journey.
