London, November 1, 2025 : British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under mounting pressure from Members of Parliament to back a legislative proposal that would permanently remove Prince Andrew, the disgraced brother of King Charles III, from the royal line of succession, The Telegraph reported on Friday.
Lawmakers across party lines argue that any possibility of Andrew ever inheriting the throne must be formally eliminated, following his removal from public duties and the stripping of his royal titles amid allegations of sexual misconduct linked to his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Prince Andrew, who has consistently denied allegations that he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl trafficked by Epstein, remains eighth in line to the British throne — after Prince William, William’s three children, Prince Harry, and Harry’s two children.
Under existing UK law, altering the royal line of succession requires an Act of Parliament, which must also be ratified by legislatures in other Commonwealth realms that recognize the British monarch as their head of state.
Lawmakers Demand Permanent Removal
Labour MP Jon Trickett told The Telegraph that the issue must be addressed definitively.
“In the event of an unimaginable family catastrophe, Andrew could still inherit the throne. The British people would never accept that – this issue must be resolved once and for all.”
Independent MP Rachael Maskell echoed the sentiment, saying,
“Regardless of how unlikely such a scenario may be, it is appropriate to remove him from the line of succession and revoke his status as Counsellor of State.”
The title of Counsellor of State allows senior members of the royal family to act on the monarch’s behalf in certain situations. However, Buckingham Palace has made it clear that Prince Andrew will not be called upon to perform any such duties in the future.
Public Opinion Favors Tough Action
Public sentiment appears to overwhelmingly support the disciplinary steps taken against the Duke of York. According to a YouGov poll conducted this week, 79% of respondents favored stripping Prince Andrew of his titles and evicting him from the Royal Lodge near Windsor Castle, while only 6% opposed the move.
More than half of those surveyed said King Charles III handled the matter appropriately, though 58% believe the royal family’s response came too late.
If MPs succeed in pushing through the proposed measure, it would mark an unprecedented step in modern British constitutional history — one that seeks to legally and permanently sever Prince Andrew’s remaining ties to royal privilege and succession.
