Red Fort Security Tightened: 200 New Cameras and UV Scanners After Deadly Blast

Security at the Red Fort is set to become significantly tighter, with authorities preparing to deploy more than 200 additional CCTV cameras and introduce Under Vehicle Scanning Systems (UVSS) as part of a major surveillance upgrade. The decision follows a series of high-level meetings among key stakeholders in the aftermath of the 10 November blast, News18 has learnt.

Currently, over 600 cameras are operational in and around the Red Fort complex. Officials familiar with the matter said an additional 200 cameras will soon be installed to enhance monitoring around the iconic monument.

The Mughal-era structure, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was shaken by a devastating explosion on 10 November, which claimed 15 lives and injured nearly 30 people. Investigators have identified the incident as a terror attack carried out by Jaish-e-Mohammad through a suicide-style bombing. An explosive-laden i20 car was detonated at the entrance of the Red Fort.

Investigations revealed that the vehicle had been parked in the Fort’s parking zone for more than three hours prior to the blast. While CCTV cameras captured its entry and exit, gaps in internal camera coverage prevented authorities from tracking its movement within the parking area. The upgraded security plan aims to rectify this by installing additional cameras and introducing the area’s first Under Vehicle Scanning System, which will screen all incoming vehicles for suspicious objects.

A senior police officer said, “The Red Fort and certain surrounding areas fall under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India. After a comprehensive assessment, the Delhi Police may formally request necessary technological enhancements from the ASI.”

Meanwhile, the PWD and MCD have been tasked with sanitising sewer lines beneath and around the monument to prevent their misuse for illicit activities. Police teams have also met with local market associations to address security concerns raised by traders and business owners.

“Based on their feedback, we are deploying extra personnel, including women staff, in the market area to ensure enhanced safety,” the officer added.
