Luas Red Line to Fully Reopen Tomorrow After Three-Month Closure

The Luas Red Line will fully reopen tomorrow following a three-month shutdown that disrupted services across Dublin’s quays, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has confirmed.

The closure stemmed from a fire at George’s Dock on August 21, which left the bridge “structurally compromised,” according to Transdev, the Luas operator. The damage required the bridge to be completely demolished and rebuilt, severing tram services between Connolly Station and The Point—an essential stretch that typically supports around 20,000 passenger journeys daily, with numbers increasing during concerts and major events.

TII carried out a detailed assessment of the bridge structure, light rail infrastructure and utility connections before approving a plan for reconstruction. An intensive works programme was then executed with support from Transdev, Jons Civil Engineering, ROD, GPX Rail and Custom House Docks Management Limited.

Luas tracks, utility links and the Overhead Contact System have now been reinstated, and the Commission for Railway Regulation (CRR) has given formal approval for passenger services to resume.

TII announced that services will recommence at 5:30am tomorrow, Friday, November 28, at George’s Dock Luas Stop. Later in the morning, at 9:45am, Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien will attend an official reopening ceremony, joined by TII representatives, local businesses and teams involved in the reconstruction.

Minister O’Brien expressed his appreciation to passengers for their patience during the extensive works, noting the importance of restoring the service ahead of the busy Christmas travel season.

Transdev Managing Director Ben Dwars praised the cooperation between agencies, stating:
“I want to acknowledge the excellent partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland and all stakeholders involved. The way everyone pulled together ensured we reached this day safely and on schedule. We are very pleased to welcome our passengers back on board.”

Anne Shaw, CEO of the National Transport Authority, also commended the collaborative effort:
“The reopening of Luas Red Line services between Connolly and The Point demonstrates the commitment and coordination of all partners in completing these complex works safely and efficiently. Restoring this key connection ahead of the busy Christmas season ensures passengers can continue to rely on Luas as a convenient and sustainable travel option.”
