A powerful explosion took place in the area outside the Red Fort this evening. Two cars parked near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station were damaged in the blast.
Initial reports confirm 9 deaths and several injuries, with a police spokesman saying the exact details of the cause of the explosion are still unclear, the report said.
Delhi's deputy fire chief said six vehicles and three autorickshaws were gutted in the blaze. Police teams are also trying to secure the area. Ambulances and fire brigade have reached the spot as investigators search for signs of what officials described as a "medium to high intensity explosion".
The incident bears eerie resemblance to previous bomb attacks that have marked Delhi's troubled past. UP and Mumbai police are on high alert following a powerful blast near Delhi's Red Fort.
