Ireland is preparing for a wet and windy weekend, with weather conditions expected to deteriorate sharply over the next 24 hours. Met Éireann has issued Status Orange weather warnings for two counties, as part of a broader series of alerts covering much of the country.
The national meteorological service has warned of widespread heavy rainfall in the coming days, issuing successive weather warnings on Friday that include as many as 13 counties. According to Met Éireann, a dynamic Atlantic weather system will dominate for the remainder of this week and into next week, bringing prolonged unsettled conditions.
Forecasters have identified the period from Saturday through to Monday night as particularly unstable, prompting the issuance of additional weather warnings. Separate alerts have also been announced for Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford, which will come into effect from midnight on Sunday until 3am on Monday.
On Saturday morning, Met Éireann upgraded its warning for Cork and Kerry to Status Orange, effective from 3am on Sunday until 6pm the same day. The heaviest rainfall is expected in higher elevations, particularly across Kerry and west Cork, where significant accumulations are forecast.
Met Éireann cautioned that the intense rainfall could lead to flooding of rivers and surface water, hazardous travelling conditions, and reduced visibility.
Separately, independent weather observer Alan O’Reilly, who runs the popular Carlow Weather social media pages, warned that forecast models indicate Orange-level rainfall in three counties, with the potential for Red-level rainfall in localized areas. In a post on X, O’Reilly said the latest projections suggest that from Saturday night into Sunday, parts of Kerry, west Cork and sections of Galway could receive in excess of 50 millimetres of rain.
Authorities are advising the public to stay informed of the latest forecasts and to exercise caution, particularly when travelling during periods of heavy rain.
