Actor Kamal Haasan attended the Hortus Art and Literature Festival in Kerala, where he participated in a conversation with actor Manju Warrier on cinema, politics, and his recent entry into Parliament. When asked how it felt to become a Rajya Sabha MP, Kamal offered a heartfelt response rooted in personal reflection.
Kamal said the moment he signed the official documents, he was reminded of his parents, D. Srinivasan Iyengar and Rajalakshmi. “I was a school dropout, and my mother would always tell me that if I had at least passed the SSLC exam, I could have secured a government job in the railways,” he shared. He recalled feeling that he had finally fulfilled her long-standing wish—albeit at the age of 71.
“After I signed, they handed me my daily allowances, and suddenly I felt this overwhelming urge to call my mother and tell her, ‘I am in a government job.’ That’s how proud I felt,” he added. Kamal noted that he is honoured to serve the people and views this role as an extension of his lifelong commitment to public service.
During the session, Kamal also elaborated on his political ideology, describing himself as a centrist. He said his production house, Raaj Kamal Films International, often supports films that align with his ideological beliefs.
On the film front, Kamal last appeared in Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, which received a lukewarm response. He is set to star in an upcoming project helmed by the stunt-director duo Anbariv and is producing a film featuring Rajinikanth. The latter project, originally slated to be directed by Sundar C., is awaiting the announcement of a new director.
