New Delhi: In an unexpected move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again captured political attention by appointing Nitin Nabin as its Acting National President, a decision that has taken political circles by surprise.
The appointment reflects a long-standing BJP tradition of entrusting significant responsibilities to leaders who are not part of the immediate public speculation. Over the years, the party’s leadership has frequently stunned observers with sudden, tightly guarded decisions, underscoring its distinctive organisational style.
A Pattern of Strategic Surprise
One of the most cited examples of the BJP’s unpredictable decision-making dates back to 2017. At the time, then party president Amit Shah reportedly informed Yogi Adityanath that he would be heading to Lucknow to take charge as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh—a decision that even Adityanath had not anticipated. Union Minister Piyush Goyal recently recalled the episode, highlighting the secrecy and discipline with which the BJP’s top leadership operates.
Political observers now see Nitin Nabin’s elevation as part of the same pattern.
An Unanticipated Rise
Amid intense speculation, the BJP announced Nitin Nabin’s appointment as Acting National President on Sunday. At the time of the announcement, Nabin was reportedly attending a party workers’ convention in his constituency and was unaware of the decision.
Party sources indicate that after January 14, he is likely to be given full-time responsibility as National President. If confirmed, the move could see Nabin create history.
At just 45-and-a-half years old, Nitin Nabin would become the youngest National President in the BJP’s history. Previously, Amit Shah assumed the role at 49, while Nitin Gadkari became president at 52. Senior leaders Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani had served as presidents of the Jana Sangh at a relatively young age, but Nabin’s elevation would mark a new generational milestone within the BJP.
Surprise Choices for Chief Ministers
The BJP’s tendency to spring surprises is not limited to organisational appointments. The party has repeatedly startled political observers with its chief ministerial selections across states.
Appointments such as Manohar Lal Khattar in Haryana, Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh, Bhajan Lal Sharma in Rajasthan, and Mohan Yadav in Madhya Pradesh were widely seen as unexpected at the time. Similarly, the complete overhaul of the Gujarat cabinet and the appointment of two chief ministers in Uttarakhand within a year reflected the party’s readiness to take bold, unconventional decisions.
In Maharashtra, despite being the single largest party, the BJP backed Eknath Shinde as Chief Minister, while in Delhi, it surprised many by appointing first-time MLA Rekha Gupta as Chief Minister—moves that further illustrate the party’s distinctive and centralised decision-making approach.
As the BJP continues to rely on surprise and strategic calculation, Nitin Nabin’s rise is being closely watched as a possible signal of generational transition and organisational recalibration within India’s ruling party.
