Himachal Pradesh: A doctor at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) in Shimla has been accused of assaulting a patient, triggering public outrage and protests at the government-run medical institution.
The incident, reported on Sunday, prompted Himachal Pradesh Health Minister Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil to assure strict action following a comprehensive inquiry. According to the complaint, the patient, a resident of a village in the Kupvi subdivision of Shimla district, had visited IGMC after experiencing breathing difficulties.
The patient alleged that the doctor spoke to him in an offensive manner and physically assaulted him when he sought respectful communication. The patient’s attendants claimed that a video of the alleged incident was recorded and has since circulated widely on social media.

Soon after the incident, the patient’s family members and supporters staged a protest outside the hospital premises, raising slogans and demanding the immediate suspension of the accused doctor.
Reacting strongly, Health Minister Shandil described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and contrary to the ethical standards of the medical profession. He identified the accused as Dr S.A.R., a specialist in pulmonary medicine, and said senior officials had been summoned to his office in connection with the matter.
“This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated. The Health Secretary, the IGMC Medical Superintendent and the Principal have been asked to provide an explanation. A detailed investigation will be conducted, and strict action will be taken to ensure such incidents are not repeated anywhere,” the minister said.
As part of the government’s response, the Medical Superintendent and Principal of IGMC were summoned to the state Secretariat.
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur termed the incident unfortunate and deeply disturbing. He said such episodes raise serious concerns about professional conduct in public healthcare institutions.
Thakur urged the Chief Minister to personally take cognisance of the matter and order an impartial probe, while also directing the IGMC administration to put safeguards in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The hospital administration has not yet issued a detailed statement on the allegations. The matter remains under investigation.
