Karnataka: A tragic case of domestic homicide has been reported from Karnataka’s Belagavi district, where a man allegedly killed his wife by suffocation after disputes over childlessness.
The accused initially attempted to mislead authorities by claiming that his wife had died of a heart attack.
The incident took place in Neginhal village of Bailhongal taluk. The victim has been identified as Rajeshwari Fakkeerappa Gilakkanavar, who was allegedly murdered by her husband, Fakkeerappa Gilakkanavar.
According to police, following the incident, the accused informed relatives that Rajeshwari had died due to a sudden cardiac arrest. He reportedly contacted family members and neighbours to convey the same version of events in an effort to conceal the crime.
Suspicion Raised During Funeral Preparations
The case came to light when Rajeshwari’s parents arrived for her funeral rites. After seeing the body, they noticed injuries and marks on her neck, which raised serious suspicion about the cause of death. They immediately approached the Bailhongal police station and lodged a complaint.
Police personnel visited the spot and conducted a preliminary investigation, during which evidence of foul play emerged.
Post-Mortem Confirms Homicide
Rajeshwari’s body was sent to the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) for a post-mortem examination. The preliminary autopsy report confirmed that the death was a case of homicide caused by suffocation.
During questioning, the accused reportedly confessed to the crime. Police subsequently arrested Fakkeerappa Gilakkanavar and remanded him to judicial custody. After completing legal formalities, the victim’s body was handed over to her family for last rites.
The incident has once again drawn attention to cases of domestic violence linked to social pressures and marital disputes. Further investigation is ongoing.
