Kim Jong Un Visits Renovated Hot Spring Resort in North Korea’s North Hamgyong Province

Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently visited the Onpho Workers’ Holiday Camp in North Hamgyong Province, the country’s largest hot spring resort, according to state media reports.

The visit took place on January 20, coinciding with the completion of a major renovation project at the facility.

During the visit, Kim inspected the resort’s bathing and leisure amenities and interacted with visitors at the poolside. State-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released photographs showing Kim conversing with women bathing in the hot spring pools, smiling and engaging in casual discussion while seated near the pool area.

Inspection of Facilities

KCNA reported that Kim, wearing a thick down jacket, personally reviewed the resort’s facilities, including the bathing areas. Despite the steam rising from the hot pools, he remained in his heavy outerwear while moving around the site and speaking with visitors. The images depict Kim standing and sitting poolside, appearing relaxed as he observed the resort’s operations.

Kim praised the upgraded facilities, describing the holiday camp as a “splendid place for rest and recreation” for the people. He noted that the renovation had transformed the resort into a space that is “balanced and harmonious with the natural environment.”

The Onpho resort underwent a multi-year renovation after Kim sharply criticised its poor management and unsanitary conditions during a visit in 2018.

Image-Building Amid Economic Strain

Analysts view the visit as part of Kim’s broader effort to soften his public image and present himself as a leader attentive to the well-being of ordinary citizens. Traditionally portrayed as a rigid and authoritarian figure, Kim has increasingly been seen engaging directly with the public in state media coverage.

The visit also comes at a time when North Korea continues to face significant economic challenges. Observers note that such public engagements appear aimed at reinforcing Kim’s image as a “caring leader” focused on improving living standards. Photographs from the visit, showing visible weight gain, have also drawn attention and discussion.

The inspection underscores Pyongyang’s emphasis on domestic tourism and public welfare projects, even as the country remains diplomatically isolated and under international sanctions.
