New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released the official schedule for the election of its new national president. BJP election officer K. Laxman announced that nomination papers will be filed on January 19, while the name of the new party president will be declared on January 20.
Party sources indicate that Nitin Naveen, the BJP’s National Working President, is the frontrunner to succeed the incumbent president J.P. Nadda, whose term has come to an end.
Election Process
The election process will be conducted at the BJP headquarters, with the following schedule:
-
Filing of nominations: January 19, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
-
Scrutiny of nominations: January 19, from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm
-
Withdrawal of nominations: January 19, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm
If more than one candidate remains in the fray, voting will be held on January 20. However, party insiders suggest that Nitin Naveen is likely to be elected unopposed.
Likely Consensus Choice
Reports indicate that Nitin Naveen enjoys the full backing of the BJP’s senior leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. As a result, no other senior leader is expected to contest the post.
Upon completion of the organisational election process, the new BJP national president is expected to formally assume office on January 20.
