Urgent Recall Issued for SMA Baby Formula Over Potential Toxin Risk

An urgent recall has been issued for several batches of SMA infant and follow-on formula products following the possible presence of a harmful toxin, Irish food safety authorities have confirmed.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) announced the recall on Monday after being alerted by manufacturer Nestlé to a potential health risk associated with the products. According to the FSAI, the recall relates to the possible presence of cereulide, a dangerous toxin.

In a statement, an FSAI spokesperson said: “Nestlé is recalling the below batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula products due to the possible presence of cereulide. Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale.”

Health Risk Explained

Cereulide is a toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus during food growth, particularly in starchy foods such as rice and pasta. Consumption of food contaminated with cereulide can cause nausea and severe vomiting. Symptoms may develop within five hours of ingestion, with illness typically lasting between six and 24 hours.

While no confirmed cases of illness have been reported at this stage, authorities have advised strict precautionary measures.

Advice to Parents and Caregivers

Parents, guardians and caregivers have been strongly advised not to feed the implicated formula products to infants or young children under any circumstances.

Nestlé has urged customers who have purchased any of the affected batches to contact the company via its online customer care form. Consumers are encouraged to provide a photograph of the product along with the batch code. The Nestlé Careline is also available on 1800 931 832 for further assistance.

Retail and Distributor Instructions

Retailers have been instructed to immediately remove the affected batches from sale and to display recall notices prominently at points of sale. Wholesalers and distributors have also been requested to contact affected customers directly and ensure the recall of all implicated products, while providing appropriate recall notifications.

The FSAI said it is continuing to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as necessary.

Affected Batches

The full list of affected SMA infant and follow-on formula batches has been released by the FSAI and Nestlé.
