PUNE: Former Union Minister and veteran sports administrator Suresh Kalmadi passed away in the early hours of Tuesday following a prolonged illness. He was 81.
According to an official statement released by his office, Kalmadi breathed his last at approximately 3:30 AM at the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, where he had been undergoing treatment.
A Distinguished Public Career A prominent face in Indian politics and sports administration for decades, Kalmadi served as a Member of Parliament representing the Pune constituency and held the portfolio of Minister of State for Railways. Beyond his political career, he was a defining figure in Indian sports, serving as the long-time President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
His tenure was marked by significant milestones, including his role in various national-level initiatives such as the biodiversity mapping of Mumbai University, which earned national acclaim.
Final Rites and Family He is survived by his wife, a son, two daughters, and their respective families, including grandchildren.
The official press release stated:
"Shri Suresh Kalmadi (81), former Member of Parliament from Pune, former Union Minister of State for Railways, and former President of the Indian Olympic Association, passed away today, January 6, at 3:30 AM in Pune after a long illness."
Funeral Arrangements His mortal remains will be kept at his residence, 'Kalmadi House' in Erandwane, Pune, until 2:00 PM today for the public to pay their last respects. The final rites are scheduled to take place at 3:30 PM at the Vaikunth Crematorium in Navi Peth, Pune.
