Perambalur, Tamil Nadu:Amid mounting political opposition criticism over a surge in gang-related violence in Tamil Nadu, a notorious criminal was killed in a police encounter in Perambalur district, officials said.
The deceased has been identified as Azhaguraj (30), a resident of Perambalur and a history-sheeter with multiple criminal cases pending against him. Police said the encounter occurred while the accused was being taken for evidence recovery.
Encounter During Evidence Recovery
According to the police, Azhaguraj was escorted to the Thirumanthurai forest area to locate weapons allegedly used in a murder attempt. During the recovery process, he reportedly attacked a sub-inspector with a concealed lethal weapon, causing serious injuries.
Police officials said the accused then attempted to flee into the forest. In response, the police opened fire in self-defence. Azhaguraj sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died on the spot. The injured sub-inspector was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital and is undergoing treatment.
Criminal Background
Azhaguraj was the prime accused in a high-profile case registered last month, in which a notorious gangster, Vellaikali, was allegedly targeted in a bomb attack while being escorted back from court on December 24. The special investigation team had arrested Azhaguraj after an intensive manhunt.
Police sources said the accused had a long criminal record and was involved in several violent offences.
Anti-Gang Operations Intensify
Officials described the encounter as part of Tamil Nadu Police’s intensified crackdown on organised crime and gang violence. The incident comes at a time when opposition parties have stepped up protests, accusing the state government of failing to control rising lawlessness.
Further legal procedures are underway, and a detailed report on the encounter is expected to be submitted to senior authorities.
