NEW DELHI – A 27-year-old SWAT commando with the Delhi Police Special Cell died on Tuesday, five days after she was allegedly bludgeoned with a dumbbell by her husband.
The victim, identified as Kajal, had been battling for her life at a private hospital following the assault on January 22.
The Incident
Kajal, a 2022-batch recruit, was reportedly attacked at her residence in West Delhi's Mohan Garden. According to police, her husband, Ankur—a clerk with the Ministry of Defence—allegedly struck her multiple times in the head with an exercise dumbbell during a domestic dispute.
Initially charged with attempt to murder, Ankur was arrested on the day of the incident. Following Kajal’s death at Yashoda Hospital in Nehru Nagar, authorities confirmed that the charges will be upgraded to murder.
A History of Domestic Strife
The couple, who married in 2023 after a period of courtship, share a one-and-a-half-year-old son. However, family members allege that the marriage was marred by persistent demands for dowry.
Kajal’s elder brother, Nikhil—himself a constable with the Delhi Police—stated that the couple had frequently moved between their home in Sonipat and the Mohan Garden flat to de-escalate tensions with in-laws. "Ankur’s family began harassing her for dowry almost immediately after the wedding," Nikhil alleged. The couple had recently returned to Delhi on January 20 for Kajal’s Republic Day duty assignments.
A Chilling Final Call
The brutality of the assault was partially captured during a phone call. Nikhil recounted that Ankur had called him during an argument with Kajal on January 22.
"Ankur asked me to record the call. Suddenly, I heard her screams before the line went dead," Nikhil said. Minutes later, Ankur reportedly called back with a confession: "He told me he had killed her."
Legal Proceedings
Before fleeing the scene, Ankur reportedly took an unconscious Kajal to a local hospital in Mohan Garden. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to Yashoda Hospital on January 24, where she passed away at approximately 6:00 AM on Tuesday.
The Delhi Police are currently awaiting the final post-mortem report. While the murder charge is being processed, officials noted that dowry-related charges have not yet been added to the FIR, pending further investigation into the family's allegations.
