Immigration Services is currently experiencing a delay in processing registration. After registration is complete, it may take up to two weeks to receive an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card by post.
To facilitate non-EEA nationals legally resident in the State who wish to travel internationally over the Christmas period and need to renew their existing permit, the Minister is issuing a Travel Confirmation Notice requesting carriers to allow them to travel using their recently expired IRP card . If their application to renew their permit has been submitted before the expiry date of their IRP card, it may be used.
Non-EEA citizens of the State who need to apply for an IRP card renewal can use their existing, recently expired IRP card to travel with confidence from 08 December 2025 to 28 February 2026, but their application for renewal of their registration permit must be submitted before the expiry date of their IRP card.
This extended travel confirmation notice is only valid from December 08, 2025 to February 28, 2026.
Note:
- Customers should download and print the travel confirmation notice. If requested, submit it to immigration authorities and airlines, along with their expired IRP card and proof of renewal application (email confirmation detailing the application date).
- The department will continue to process applications for renewal.
- The department will inform all airlines and foreign missions about ongoing initiatives.
- However, if you have to travel through a third country to return to Ireland, it is up to that jurisdiction to require you to meet their immigration requirements, including a visa.
- More information about these adjustments can be found in the FAQ for the Website Travel Confirmation Notice 2025.
