Dhaka/New Delhi: Following a decisive victory in the February 12 general elections, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is preparing to form the next government in Bangladesh. In a significant diplomatic gesture, the party has formally invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. The move is widely seen as an effort to reinforce bilateral ties between the two neighbouring nations.
Diplomatic Outreach Underway
As part of broader diplomatic outreach, Chief Adviser of the interim government, Muhammad Yunus, has extended invitations to heads of government from 13 countries, including India. Nations such as China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Malaysia are among those invited. However, there has been no official confirmation yet from New Delhi regarding Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the ceremony.
Commitment to Constructive Engagement
The BNP has expressed gratitude for Prime Minister Modi’s congratulatory message following the party’s electoral success. Party spokespersons have stated that the new administration is keen to work closely with India to promote regional peace and stability. Emphasising mutual respect and sensitivity to security concerns, BNP leaders signalled their intention to pursue constructive engagement with New Delhi.
During a telephone conversation with Tarique Rahman on February 13, Prime Minister Modi reportedly conveyed India’s readiness to enhance bilateral cooperation and further strengthen relations with Bangladesh.
A Political Milestone After 35 Years
At 60, Tarique Rahman’s ascension to office marks a significant political moment for Bangladesh, as he becomes the first male head of government in 35 years. The son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Rahman’s leadership is expected to shape Bangladesh’s foreign policy direction at a critical juncture for South Asian geopolitics.
Observers note that the evolving stance of India will play a decisive role in determining the trajectory of future bilateral relations between the two countries.
