Assam: A landmark six-lane bridge spanning the Brahmaputra River has been constructed at a cost of ₹3,300 crore, marking a significant milestone in infrastructure development in Northeast India. The structure is the region’s first extradosed bridge — a modern engineering design that integrates features of both girder and cable-stayed bridges to enhance load-bearing capacity and durability.
The new bridge is expected to dramatically reduce travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati from approximately 45 minutes to just seven minutes. It forms a key segment of an 8.4-kilometre connectivity corridor aimed at easing persistent traffic congestion in Assam’s largest urban centre.
Given the region’s seismic sensitivity, the bridge incorporates advanced base isolation technology to withstand earthquakes. Additionally, a real-time structural health monitoring system has been installed to ensure continuous safety assessment and maintenance efficiency.
Historic Ceremony and Strategic Airstrip in Dibrugarh
Ahead of the bridge inauguration, a historic event in Dibrugarh drew national attention. The Prime Minister arrived aboard an Indian Air Force C-130J Super Hercules, landing directly on Northeast India’s first emergency landing facility developed on a national highway.
The 4.2-kilometre airstrip, constructed at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore along the Moran Bypass, is designed for dual civilian and strategic use. In times of war or natural disaster, it can facilitate the landing of fighter jets and transport aircraft, strengthening India’s rapid response capabilities in the region.
As part of the inauguration ceremony, advanced fighter aircraft, including the Sukhoi Su-30MKI and the Dassault Rafale, conducted aerial demonstrations. The establishment of such infrastructure near the sensitive China border is widely seen as a substantial boost to India’s defence preparedness.
Economic and Urban Transformation
The ceremony was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, among other dignitaries.
Beyond its immediate impact on transportation, the bridge is viewed as the first step in developing North Guwahati into a “twin city” alongside Guwahati. Improved accessibility to educational institutions, commercial hubs and tourist destinations is expected to stimulate growth in real estate, trade and investment across the region.
Describing both projects as transformative, the Prime Minister noted that the bridge and emergency airstrip represent milestone achievements in accelerating development across the northeastern states — reinforcing connectivity, economic expansion and national security in equal measure.
