Bengaluru: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its attack on the Congress-led Karnataka government, demanding the immediate clearance of ₹37,000 crore in pending payments owed to local contractors engaged in development works across the state.
Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka alleged that small and medium-scale contractors—many of whom lack the backing of large corporations—are facing severe financial distress due to prolonged delays in payments. Addressing reporters in Bengaluru, he described the situation as not merely an administrative lapse but a case of deliberate financial neglect.
“Not Administrative Failure, But Economic Breakdown”
Ashoka criticised the government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, claiming its inaction has pushed Karnataka into what he termed a “dangerous financial situation.”
“Lakhs of workers and thousands of small and medium contractors are waiting for the fruits of their labour,” he said. “This is not just a governance failure; it is a conscious act of economic injustice.”
He further alleged that several contractors had mortgaged their homes and pledged family gold to secure high-interest loans in order to complete public infrastructure projects. With dues remaining unpaid, many are now being forced to stage protests to demand their rightful payments.
Ashoka accused the government of failing to prioritise payments for essential public works such as roads, schools and hospitals, while allegedly diverting funds toward political appeasement and publicity initiatives.
Response to Minister Priyank Kharge
The BJP leader also responded sharply to recent remarks by Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge concerning the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Ashoka suggested that such statements were aimed at pleasing party leadership and consolidating political standing.
“Targeting the RSS is like spitting at the sky—it will fall back,” he remarked, adding that governments that betray public trust cannot remain in power indefinitely.
Contractors Warn of Agitation
Contractor associations have reportedly warned that if pending dues are not cleared promptly, they will launch intensified protests, including demonstrations involving their families. Ashoka called on the Chief Minister to break his silence, disclose transparent details regarding the arrears, and demonstrate accountability in governance.
The controversy underscores mounting political friction in Karnataka amid growing concerns over fiscal management and the welfare of small-scale stakeholders involved in public infrastructure development.
