In a major anti-corruption crackdown in Delhi, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) official for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹4 lakh. The arrest has once again brought the issue of corruption within civic administration under sharp public scrutiny.
The accused has been identified as Lt Col Abhishek Kumar Mishra, who was serving as Deputy Commissioner of the Shahdara North Zone of the MCD. According to officials, Mishra was arrested in a trap operation conducted by the CBI after the agency received credible information that he had demanded a bribe in exchange for facilitating official work and granting approvals.
Officials said the CBI had been alerted in advance about the alleged demand for illegal gratification. Acting on the complaint, the agency devised a carefully planned sting operation and laid a trap. Mishra was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount, following which he was immediately taken into custody. The operation was conducted with utmost secrecy to ensure that the accused remained unaware of the investigation until the moment of arrest.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Delhi’s administrative circles and has reignited concerns over systemic corruption in government departments. Investigators are now probing whether other officials or intermediaries may also have been involved in the alleged bribery network.
Following the development, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption. In a statement posted on social media platform X, she asserted that the government would show no leniency towards corruption and that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found guilty. She further reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to transparent and clean governance.
According to PTI, the CBI has initiated further legal proceedings against the accused officer and is examining whether the bribe demand was part of a larger organised network within the civic body. Investigators are also reviewing the officer’s previous service record and past transactions to determine whether similar allegations or patterns of misconduct exist.
The arrest is being viewed as a strong message that no public official is above the law. Experts believe such stringent action could help strengthen transparency and accountability across government departments while serving as a deterrent against corruption in public offices.
Further disclosures are expected as the investigation progresses.
