A controversy has erupted in Maharashtra following the circulation of an alleged viral video linked to state minister Narhari Zirwal. The matter has now taken a legal turn, with an FIR registered at the Cuffe Parade Police Station in Mumbai.
The complaint was filed based on allegations made by a transgender individual, bringing serious charges including blackmail and violations under the Information Technology Act. The case has sparked intense political debate, with both ruling and opposition parties weighing in on the issue.
Allegations and Investigation
According to the FIR, the complainant has alleged that attempts were made to exert pressure and issue threats using the purported video. It is also claimed that the video may have been edited or fabricated and subsequently circulated on social media to defame and intimidate.
Further allegations suggest that the accused demanded assistance in securing employment within the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), failing which the video would be made public. These claims have led investigators to examine the case from the angles of blackmail, conspiracy, and cybercrime.
Police officials confirmed that the case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including Sections 79 and 351(1), along with applicable sections of the IT Act. These provisions relate to offences such as misuse of personal data, dissemination of defamatory content, and criminal intimidation.
Authenticity Yet to Be Established
Authorities have emphasised that the authenticity of the viral video has not yet been verified. Digital forensic analysis is currently underway to determine whether the content is genuine, manipulated, or entirely fabricated.
The emergence of the video has already impacted the public image of the minister, while also drawing attention to broader concerns surrounding cybercrime, privacy violations, and the misuse of digital platforms.
Call for Caution
As the investigation continues, police have urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified videos or information on social media. Officials stressed that premature conclusions could hinder the inquiry and contribute to misinformation.
The outcome of the ongoing probe is expected to play a crucial role in determining the direction of the case in the coming days.
