Self-Styled Spiritual Man Arrested in Nashik Sexual Assault Case; Political Links Trigger Wider Controversy

Maharashtra: In a development that has sent shockwaves across Maharashtra, a self-proclaimed spiritual man, Ashok Kharat, popularly known as “Captain,” has been arrested by the Crime Branch in Nashik on charges of sexually assaulting a woman.

According to police officials, a case has been registered at the Sarkarwada Police Station, alleging that the accused administered sedatives to the victim before committing the assault. Investigators have also reportedly recovered multiple incriminating videos from a pen drive seized during the operation, further intensifying the seriousness of the case.

The accused, who is expected to be produced before a district court, had built a significant following over the years, with several political figures, officials, and celebrities reportedly seeking his guidance. His arrest has therefore sparked widespread public and political reactions across the state.

Ashok Kharat is associated with a temple trust in Sinnar taluk, where he had established a religious institution that attracted considerable attention. Notably, Rupali Chakankar is reported to be a trustee of the temple, while senior political leaders, including Eknath Shinde, had visited the premises in the past—further amplifying scrutiny around the case.

The controversy has taken a political turn, with Sushma Andhare publicly questioning Chakankar’s alleged association with the accused. Andhare has raised concerns over the possible misuse of official position, particularly in light of earlier allegations against Kharat, and has demanded accountability if any attempts were made to shield him.

Meanwhile, the Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti has intervened in the matter, calling for a thorough investigation and stringent legal action against the accused.

Kharat, a former Merchant Navy officer, had cultivated an image as a numerologist and spiritual advisor. He reportedly claimed extensive global exposure during his maritime career and later positioned himself as an expert in metaphysical and cosmological practices. His growing influence among high-profile individuals had elevated his public profile in recent years.

However, the emergence of serious criminal allegations has now cast a shadow over his activities, raising broader concerns about the unchecked influence of self-styled spiritual figures and their connections within political and social circles.

Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further revelations are expected as forensic analysis and witness testimonies continue to unfold.
