NCERT Unveils 'Kaveri': A Balanced New English Curriculum for Class 9

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has officially introduced "Kaveri," a comprehensive new English textbook for Class 9. Developed under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, Kaveri marks a significant shift in India’s secondary education landscape, succeeding the long-standing textbooks Beehive and Moments, which served students for nearly two decades (2006–2026).

Strategic Consolidation and Focus

In a move to create a more focused and manageable learning experience, NCERT has consolidated the English curriculum from two books into a single anthology. The total number of prescribed texts has been streamlined from 29 to 16, ensuring that students can engage more deeply with each literary work while reducing the overall academic load.

Editorial Highlights: A Global-Local Synthesis

The core philosophy behind Kaveri is the achievement of a "perfect balance" between indigenous heritage and international perspectives.

  • Equal Representation: The anthology features a 50/50 split, with eight texts by Indian authors and eight by international writers.
  • Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS): The curriculum gives greater weight to Indian voices, opening with a celebrated story by Sudha Murty. Other prominent Indian contributors include:
    • Subramania Bharati (Tamil poetry)
    • Rabindranath Tagore (Nobel Laureate)
    • Temsula Ao and Mitra Phukan (Representing the rich literary traditions of Northeast India)
  • Global Perspectives: To maintain a worldwide outlook, the book includes works by diverse international figures such as Charles Swain, Maya Anthony, Irene Chua, and David Roth.

Inspirational and Contemporary Content

Beyond traditional literature, Kaveri integrates contemporary narratives aimed at character building and social awareness. Notable inclusions are:

  • "The World of Limitless Possibilities": A piece based on an interview with Paralympic athlete Deepa Malik.
  • "Gifts of Grace: Honouring Our Vocations": An anonymous poem celebrating the dignity of labor and professional callings.

Publisher’s Note

This transition reflects a modern pedagogical commitment to the Indian Knowledge System while ensuring students remain competitive and culturally literate on a global stage. Kaveri is designed to foster a nuanced understanding of language through a curated selection of prose and poetry that resonates with the 21st-century learner.
