BENGALURU – In a heartbreaking incident that highlights the devastating impact of regressive superstitions, a 27-year-old MBA graduate allegedly died by suicide in Bengaluru’s MEI Layout, just days before her wedding.
The deceased, identified as Vidyajyothi, took the extreme step after an astrologer predicted that her fiancé had a "short lifespan" and would not survive long after their marriage.
A Tragic Turn of Events
Vidyajyothi and her partner had been in a long-term relationship. Despite initial resistance from their families due to inter-caste differences, the couple eventually secured their parents' blessings. However, the atmosphere of celebration turned somber during a traditional horoscope matching session—a common precursor to weddings in the region.
The astrologer consulted by the families claimed the groom-to-be suffered from ‘Alpayu’ (short life expectancy). This prophecy reportedly pushed Vidyajyothi into a state of severe mental distress and clinical anxiety.
Rituals Over Rationality
In an attempt to "ward off the evil omen," the family initiated a nine-day sequence of specialized prayers and remedial rituals (Pujas) as prescribed by the astrologer. On the eighth day of these rituals, Vidyajyothi retreated to her room and locked the door.
When she failed to respond to repeated calls from her family, they broke open the door only to find her unresponsive. She was rushed to a nearby facility, but was tragically declared dead.
Note: This tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the psychological toll that fatalistic predictions can take on young minds. Authorities and social activists continue to emphasize the need for rational thinking and mental health support over reliance on unverified supernatural claims.
