Patna, March 5: Months after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a sweeping victory in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is reportedly preparing for a significant shift in his political career, with sources indicating that he will file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
The development marks a potential turning point in Bihar’s political landscape. If elected to the Upper House of Parliament, Nitish Kumar would have to relinquish the post of Chief Minister, bringing to an end his long tenure at the helm of the state government. Kumar, who has been a dominant figure in Bihar politics for nearly two decades, recently began a record 10th term as Chief Minister following the NDA’s emphatic victory in the state.
According to sources cited by PTI, Kumar is expected to file his nomination in Patna alongside Nitin Nabin, who recently made a surprise entry as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The move follows a crucial meeting of the Janata Dal (United) leadership earlier in the day, attended by senior party leaders including Sanjay Jha and Rajiv Ranjan Singh. The meeting reportedly focused on the party’s strategy for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
Sources also indicated that Amit Shah, India’s Union Home Minister, is expected to be present in Patna when the nominations are filed, underscoring the significance of the development within the ruling alliance.
Speculation surrounding the Rajya Sabha nomination had earlier suggested that Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, might make his political debut by contesting from the JD(U) quota. However, the latest developments indicate that the party may instead field Nitish Kumar himself for the Upper House seat.
Elections to five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar are scheduled in the upcoming round. While the BJP is expected to contest two seats, its ally JD(U) is likely to nominate two candidates, with the remaining seat anticipated to be contested by other parties.
If the nomination proceeds as expected, Nitish Kumar’s entry into the Rajya Sabha would signal a major political transition in Bihar, potentially reshaping leadership dynamics within both the state government and the NDA alliance.
