New Delhi: Voting for the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal commenced at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday across multiple constituencies, marking a crucial phase in the electoral cycle. The Election Commission of India (ECI) confirmed that comprehensive arrangements have been put in place to ensure a smooth, secure, and transparent polling process in both states.
In Tamil Nadu, polling is being conducted in a single phase covering all 234 Assembly constituencies. With an electorate exceeding 5.7 crore voters, authorities have implemented extensive logistical and security measures to manage the large-scale democratic exercise efficiently.
Meanwhile, in West Bengal, voting for Phase 1 is underway across 152 constituencies spanning 16 districts. A significant deployment of central armed police forces has been made, particularly in sensitive and high-risk areas, to maintain law and order and prevent any incidents of violence or voter intimidation. The second phase of polling in the state is scheduled for April 29.
Election officials have urged voters to carry valid identification and adhere to all guidelines issued by the poll body. The ECI has reiterated its commitment to conducting elections that are free, fair, and peaceful, with strict enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct.
Campaigning in both states concluded earlier this week, setting the stage for a direct contest among major political parties and alliances. The counting of votes will take place in accordance with the schedule to be announced by the Election Commission.
