India Raises Alarm After Indian Vessels Come Under Fire in Strait of Hormuz

India has expressed serious concern following an incident in the Strait of Hormuz, where two Indian-flagged merchant vessels reportedly came under fire, raising fresh alarms over the security of one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.

At a press briefing in Colombo on Sunday, Vikram Misri described the development as “extremely disturbing,” underscoring India’s strong reaction to the targeting of commercial shipping. He confirmed that New Delhi has formally conveyed its concerns to Iranian authorities.

Reiterating India’s longstanding position, Misri stressed that international waterways must remain open, secure, and free from disruption. He emphasized the importance of ensuring unimpeded passage for all vessels, particularly those involved in energy transportation and global trade.

“We have clearly conveyed the need to uphold the safety of mariners and to respect the principle of free navigation through international waters,” he stated.

The vessels involved—Samnar Herad, a large crude carrier, and Jag Arnav, a bulk carrier—were reportedly transporting crude oil while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor that facilitates nearly 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

According to initial reports, both ships came under fire during their passage and were compelled to alter course, returning to the Persian Gulf. No injuries were reported among the crew members.

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the incident and summoned Mohammad Fathali to lodge a formal protest. During the meeting, India urged Iranian authorities to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of Indian vessels and to facilitate the uninterrupted movement of ships bound for Indian ports.

The incident has intensified concerns over maritime security in the region, particularly in light of the Strait’s strategic importance to global energy supply chains.
