Suspect Identified in White House Dinner Shooting; In Custody, Hospitalised

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed relief following a major security scare involving Donald Trump, stating that he was reassured to learn that the American President and other senior officials were safe and unharmed after an armed individual disrupted a high-profile event in Washington, D.C.

In a message posted on X, Modi said he was “relieved to learn that President Trump, the First Lady and the Vice President are safe and unharmed following the recent security incident.” He further emphasized that “violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned,” while extending his best wishes for their continued safety and well-being.

Security Breach at High-Profile Event

The incident occurred during the prestigious White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where an armed suspect reportedly stormed the lobby outside the ballroom hosting the gathering. The event was attended by President Trump along with top members of the U.S. administration, journalists, and public figures.

According to reports, the suspect—armed with firearms and knives—attempted to advance toward the venue before being intercepted by the United States Secret Service. Panic ensued as attendees inside the ballroom took cover, with some reporting hearing multiple gunshots during the confrontation.

Swift Response and Evacuation

Security personnel acted promptly to evacuate President Trump, who was confirmed to be unharmed. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, was taken into custody at the scene.

Authorities have indicated that the individual is believed to have acted alone, with no immediate evidence pointing to a broader conspiracy. A law enforcement officer sustained an impact to a bullet-resistant vest during the incident but is expected to recover.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser stated that there was “no reason to believe” additional suspects were involved and reassured the public that there was no ongoing threat.

Event Cancelled Amid Security Concerns

All dignitaries under Secret Service protection, including Vice President JD Vance, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, were safely evacuated from the venue.

Although there was an initial attempt to resume proceedings, the event was ultimately called off due to lingering security concerns.

Trump Reacts

Speaking later at the White House, President Trump described the suspect as a “sick person,” adding that authorities believe the attacker acted as a lone wolf. He underscored the need for heightened security measures, stating that current circumstances demand unprecedented levels of protection, while affirming that such incidents would not be allowed to disrupt societal stability.

The episode has once again highlighted the evolving security challenges faced during high-profile public events, even under extensive protective arrangements.
