After 5 days of chaos, an alliance of 6 parties, and a coup, the Tamil Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) came to power.
Initially, the Congress offered five seats, but with conditions - the TVK had to keep "communal forces", i.e. the BJP and AIADMK , and their allies out of power. The CPI offered two more seats, offering conditional outside support. Citing the need to prevent "backdoor entry" by the BJP, the CPI(M) offered two more seats, taking the total number of MLAs to 116. The crucial final decisions - two seats for the VCK and/or two for the IUML - the other two were part of the DMK-led alliance - took more than five days to come together.
By 5 pm on Saturday, VCK and IUML had submitted letters of support to TVK, taking the alliance's tally to 120 - two more seats than the majority, which, on paper, was enough to form a stable government.
Despite meeting Vijay three times in three days and not even once issuing an official invitation – citing the inadequacy of written proof of majority support – Arlekkar finally sat down before a TVK delegation with letters from 120 MLAs, thus giving the TVK alliance 121 seats (including the two seats with Vijay)…
Including TVK, the coalition now has six parties. By any constitutional reckoning, those numbers were now sufficient to form a government.
Tamil Nadu's next Chief Minister Vijay received his appointment letter around 8.30 pm. He will take oath at 10.30 am on Sunday, ushering in the era of 'Dalapathy', as his fans call him. The venue is the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.
Finally, after a turbulent period, the Tamil Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) came to power in Tamil Nadu with 120 seats...
