At least four people, including a senior citizen, were hospitalised following a suspected drive-by shooting in the Brixton area of south London in the early hours of Saturday, raising fresh concerns over public safety in the locality.
According to initial reports, the assailant is believed to have opened fire indiscriminately from a moving vehicle. Emergency services responded swiftly to the incident, which was reported at approximately 1:14 a.m.
Casualties and Emergency Response
A 25-year-old man remains in a life-threatening condition, while three others—aged 21, 47, and 70—sustained injuries assessed as non-life-threatening. The London Ambulance Service confirmed that all four victims were treated at the scene before being transported to medical facilities, including a major trauma centre.
Police Investigation Underway
The Metropolitan Police has launched a full-scale investigation into the shooting. Authorities confirmed that no arrests had been made at the time of reporting, but emphasised that efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible were ongoing.
Detective Chief Inspector Allam Bhangoo, who is leading the investigation, described the incident as “an act of indiscriminate violence,” acknowledging the alarm it would cause among local residents. He urged witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist the inquiry.
Area Secured, Possible Link to Separate Attack
Police teams carried out extensive searches in and around the Southwyk House Estate and Coldharbour Lane, with sections of the area cordoned off for forensic examination. Road closures were expected to remain in place through Sunday morning.
Investigators are also examining a potential connection between the shooting and a separate violent incident reported roughly an hour later. In that case, a 33-year-old man was discovered with multiple stab wounds in Acre Lane and was taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
Eyewitness Accounts
Local accounts suggest the area was crowded at the time of the shooting. A nearby shop worker, identified as Moh John, reported that a gathering or party had been taking place, and described scenes of panic as people fled the area following the gunfire. He stated that several individuals attempted to seek refuge in his shop, prompting him to lock the premises for safety.
As investigations continue, authorities have reiterated their appeal for public cooperation, underscoring the seriousness of the incident and its impact on community security.
