Tensions are escalating during protests in Bangladesh

Tensions are escalating during protests against the construction of an 81-foot tall statue of Lord Rama in Gaibandha, Bangladesh, over allegations that the statue of Lord Rama was desecrated.

Hindu organizations are protesting nationwide against the desecration of the image of Lord Rama in Bangladesh and the halting of the construction of the statue of Lord Rama by builders in the northern Gaibandha (Gaibandha) district due to threats from terrorist groups.

Hindus took to the streets in the capital  Dhaka and other cities,   demonstrating with torches and chanting "Jai Shri Ram, Jai Shri Ram".They demanded the arrest of those responsible. Hindu organizations gave the authorities a 72-hour ultimatum, warning that there would be major protests if action was not taken.

The controversy arose when the construction of the giant statue of Lord Rama was halted, despite reports that most of the work had been completed, following threats from Islamic groups opposing the project.

  • Reason for protest: Hindu organizations have alleged that Islamist groups insulted the image of Lord Rama by throwing shoes at it during a protest against the 81-foot tall statue of Lord Rama built in Palashbari, Gaibandha.
  • Statue construction halted: The temple committee had to temporarily suspend the construction of this statue, which had cost nearly 80 million, due to the threat.
  • Requirements: The protesters are putting forward strong demands such as the immediate arrest of the culprits, the formation of a Minority Protection Commission, and ensuring security for places of worship.
  • Ultimatum: Hindu organizations have given the government a 72-hour deadline to arrest the accused. If action is not taken, the 'Hindu Mahajot' has warned that strong protests will be organized in all 64 districts of Bangladesh and Ram temples will be built in all the districts.
  • Status of minorities: Global concern has been raised over the increasing incidents of atrocities against Hindus and destruction of temples in Bangladesh following political upheavals in recent years.
  • These developments have reignited debates over religious freedom and minority rights in Bangladesh, where Hindus make up about 8% of the population.
