KYIV— A Russian strike on Kyiv early Saturday damaged overhead power lines on the Northern Bridge across the Dnipro River, forcing authorities to suspend traffic on a key route linking the Ukrainian capital’s eastern and western banks.
The attack caused damage to the bridge’s overhead electrical infrastructure, according to initial reports. No casualties have been reported.
Traffic on the Northern Bridge was halted following the strike as authorities assessed the damage. The crossing is an important transport link across the Dnipro and connects residential and commercial areas on opposite sides of the capital.
The incident comes days after the Southern Bridge, another major crossing over the Dnipro, was targeted on Thursday, according to Ukrainian reports.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has described Moscow’s strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure as retaliation for attacks by Ukraine on Russia’s energy facilities. Moscow has repeatedly framed its strikes as responses to Ukrainian attacks, while Kyiv has accused Russia of targeting critical infrastructure and civilian areas.
The extent of the damage to the Northern Bridge and the duration of the traffic disruption were not immediately clear.
The latest strike comes amid continued Russian attacks across Ukraine and ongoing Ukrainian strikes against targets inside Russia, with both sides increasingly targeting infrastructure linked to their adversary’s military and energy networks.
