An Indian student drowned while swimming in a lake, Police Issue special safety advisory for expats.

Munich- An Indian student drowned while swimming in a lake in Germany.

The deceased has been identified as Jeffrin (29), a native of Tamil Nadu state, India and a Master’s student in Automotive Engineering at the Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences. The incident occurred on Sunday evening at the famous Lake Lußsee in Munich-Langwied, Bavaria.

Jeffrin went for a swim in the lake around 6:30 PM on Sunday. While swimming, he suddenly got into distress and sank underwater. Although his accompanying friend and local residents attempted a rescue, they were unable to bring him ashore due to the strong undercurrent.

An Indian friend in Munich immediately alerted the emergency services. Following this, a search operation was launched by German life-saving organisations, including the DLRG, Wasserwacht (Water Rescue), the fire brigade, and the police. The body was recovered after a two-hour search utilizing helicopters and divers equipped with advanced rescue gear.

Jeffrin had been residing in Ingolstadt. Efforts to repatriate his body are currently underway under the guidance of the Indian Consulate in Munich. The Munich Police's 'Commissariat 14' unit has launched an investigation into the incident.

Police Issue Heatwave Advisory

In light of the tragedy, the Munich Police issued a special safety advisory for expats. The directive warns that when entering Germany's lakes and rivers during the summer, individuals must pay close attention to depth and sudden water temperature changes.

Authorities emphasized that people should only swim in designated bathing areas and strictly adhere to all posted safety warnings. Officials stated that careless behavior can lead to major accidents, while following guidelines significantly reduces the risk of danger.
