A video that has gone viral on social media shows some Australian truck drivers making hateful remarks against Indians and using language that incites violence. There are also reports that the radio communication system used by truck drivers for road safety is also being misused to spread such hate messages.
Many Indian drivers are said to avoid using the radio because they fear being insulted if they speak in Indian or Punjabi. Some Indian drivers have reported that they are subjected to racial slurs and discrimination at work and in public places. These situations have caused great concern and fear among the Indian community in Australia.
While it is rare for authorities to officially receive complaints, drivers and experts say this is due to challenges in identifying perpetrators, language barriers, understanding of workplace rights and a sense of inferiority that it will make any difference.
There is a growing demand for the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and take strict action against hate speech and racist attacks.
