"Temperatures up to 29°C" Apply sunscreen, stay hydrated, check on vulnerable neighbors, sun protection... Public health officials Warned

"Irish people should take precautions as temperatures are expected to reach 29°C in some parts of the country this week," Met Éireann has warned .

A strong high-pressure system dominating the country is expected to cause a rapid rise in temperatures in the coming days. However, weather forecasters have warned that the daytime heat will be accompanied by "humid" and "snowy" nights, which will make sleeping conditions very uncomfortable.

Thermal progress.

According to the latest Met Eireann National Forecast , the mercury will rise steadily day by day before a dramatic drop over the weekend:
  • Monday to Tuesday : The week starts with strong sunshine, especially in the south and south-east, with temperatures rising to 26°C by Tuesday afternoon.
  • Wednesday : The weather will become very hot and humid, with high temperatures reaching 28°C. Leinster will experience the hottest temperatures, while the west and north-west will see more cloudier conditions and showers.
  • Thursday (Peak Heat) : Thursday is expected to be the hottest day of the week. Expect temperatures of 28°C to 29°C, with Leinster once again expecting the most sunshine.

Tropical nights and high humidity

Met Office has warned that a smog of warm continental air will make overnight conditions exceptionally oppressive. Nighttime temperatures are forecast to rise to 15°C to 18°C , creating sticky and humid conditions that will make it difficult to cool homes.

Weekend weather analysis

This heat wave will be short-lived. Current weather indicators indicate that the weather will change significantly before the weekend. The arrival of a fresher, cooler air mass will cause temperatures to drop by 7 to 12 degrees. Saturday and Sunday will be a steady but very cool 17°C to 22°C, with sunshine and occasional showers.
Public health officials are urging people to ensure sun protection by applying SPF, staying hydrated and checking on vulnerable neighbors during the heat on Wednesday and Thursday.
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of how well a sunscreen protects the skin from the UVB rays of sunlight. These UV rays are the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer. Met Éireann warns that the UV Index will be very high in Ireland with temperatures currently reaching 29°C.

Different types of SPF measurements

  • SPF 15: Blocks 93% of UVB rays. Can only be used when the sun is low.
  • SPF 30: Blocks 97% of UVB rays. This is the minimum amount recommended by the Irish Cancer Society.
  • SPF 50+: Blocks 98% of UVB rays. This is a must for children, fair-skinned people, and those who work long hours in the sun.

Important things to note during this hot season

  • Broad-Spectrum: UVA in your sunscreen bottleMake sure it is circled. This will provide protection against both UVA rays, which age the skin, and UVB rays, which burn the skin.
  • Dosage to use: One teaspoon for face and neckIn terms of quantity, at least six teaspoons are enough to cover the entire body.Sunscreen should also be used in moderation.
  • Reapply every 2 hours.: Sunscreen wears off quickly due to sweat and humidity, so reapply every two hours.
  • Check the duration: Heat can reduce the effectiveness of sunscreen. So don't use old bottles from previous years.
