Diplomatic Clash in the Gulf: Iran Demands Freedom for Downed Su-24 Pilots, Qatar Categorically Denies Detention

TEHRAN/DOHA — A hidden chapter of the ongoing Middle East conflict has burst into the open, triggering a sharp diplomatic dispute between Tehran and Doha after Iran publicly demanded the immediate release of three military pilots it claims have been held captive in Qatar for six months.

The confrontation escalated when General Mohammad Bagherzadeh, a senior commander of the Iranian armed forces, issued a formal appeal to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). According to state-backed media reports, Tehran asserted that three Iranian pilots—identified as Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Behraveshian—were captured alive after their Su-24 fighter jets went down during an operation early in the regional conflict.

According to Iranian authorities, the aircraft had participated in a long-range sortie targeting military infrastructure in the region. Tehran alleged that the detained aviators have been denied contact with their families or consular representation and urged the ICRC to intervene under the Geneva Conventions to secure their health assessment and repatriation.

The allegations drew a swift and absolute rejection from Qatari officials.

Majed Al Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, took to social media to categorically dismiss the claims as entirely baseless. Expressing surprise at the timing of the announcement amid fragile de-escalation efforts, Doha maintained that the jets had violated Qatari airspace and failed to respond to radio warnings, prompting defensive actions under standard rules of engagement.

"We categorically deny the claims circulating regarding the detention of Iranian pilots and are surprised by these misleading statements at this particular time," Al Ansari stated.

According to Qatari authorities, search-and-rescue teams deployed following the March incident recovered only the remains of one pilot, which Doha subsequently offered to hand over to Tehran alongside an open invitation for an Iranian technical team to inspect the site records—an invitation Qatar says remains unanswered.

The explosive public dispute introduces a volatile new humanitarian and diplomatic hurdle into the Gulf region, testing delicate regional channels as international monitors urge both sides to de-escalate tensions.
