BUDAPEST — At least 12 people were killed and 10 others seriously injured early Sunday morning when a Polish-registered passenger bus careened off the road and plunged into a deep ditch along the M3 motorway in eastern Hungary.
The catastrophic crash occurred near the town of Mezökeresztes, roughly 130 kilometers northeast of Budapest. According to Hungarian emergency services and state disaster management agencies, the bus was carrying nearly 60 passengers when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the heavy vehicle to overturn.
First responders, including multiple units of firefighters, ambulance crews, and regional disaster response teams, rushed to the scene in the darkness. Rescuers worked for hours using hydraulic cutting tools to free trapped passengers from the mangled wreckage.
The injured, several of whom remain in critical condition, were transported by ambulances and emergency medical helicopters to nearby hospitals in Miskolc and surrounding areas. Local authorities have established an emergency information hotline for families seeking updates on the victims.
Hungarian police and traffic safety inspectors have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash, examining factors including road conditions, vehicle mechanics, and driver fatigue. Polish consular officials are coordinating closely with local Hungarian authorities to provide assistance to the victims and their families.
