LONDON — British counter-terrorism officers arrested five men early Sunday near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire—a key Royal Air Force base utilized by the U.S. military—after a local resident reported suspicious vehicles heading toward the facility.
The Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Policing command launched an immediate investigation after armed officers intercepted three vehicles in the village of Whelford, which borders the strategic airfield. The suspects were initially detained on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act before being further arrested on suspicion of the preparation of a terrorist act.
Police received an emergency call regarding three suspicious vans traveling toward the military installation, prompting authorities to establish a 400-meter security perimeter. This security measure resulted in the precautionary evacuation of roughly 85 households in nearby Whelford. Additionally, army explosive ordnance disposal teams and remote-controlled robots were deployed to examine the vehicles amid heightened security concerns.
RAF Fairford has hosted U.S. Air Force units under longstanding agreements and has seen increased operational use. Security services are currently investigating potential foreign links and motives behind the movement, while officials have urged the public to avoid speculation as forensic sweeps and questioning continue.
