GENEVA — The ongoing El Niño climate event is strengthening rapidly and could reach record levels by the end of the year, increasing the risk of extreme heat, drought and flooding in different parts of the world, the World Meteorological Organization has warned.
In its latest Global Seasonal Climate Update released on Thursday, the WMO said there is a near-100% probability that El Niño will continue through February 2027, with the event expected to reach its peak around December. Sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific are forecast to rise to exceptionally high levels.
The weather pattern can influence rainfall and temperature conditions across several regions, increasing the risk of extreme weather. The WMO said the strengthening event is developing against a background of record-high ocean temperatures and continued global warming.
