PARIS — A cyberattack targeting refrigeration systems at several French supermarket chains has disrupted store operations and led to food losses. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has reportedly asked the country’s national cybersecurity agency to investigate the incident.
Retailers affected reportedly include Intermarché, Co-Operative U, Carrefour, E. Leclerc and Monoprix. Co-Operative U’s chief executive said 80 of the group’s approximately 2,000 stores were affected. Reports also indicated that more than 300 Intermarché and Netto stores had been targeted.
The attack disrupted connected refrigeration controls, causing temperatures in some refrigerators and freezers to rise. As a result, stores had to discard food that could no longer be safely stored. Some affected outlets have since resumed normal operations.
Investigators are examining possible security weaknesses in the technical systems used to control refrigeration equipment. The manufacturer Danfoss said some affected devices were running outdated software. However, the identity of those responsible for the cyberattack has not been officially confirmed.
The full scale of the incident, the financial losses and any possible impact beyond France remain unclear pending further investigation.
