DUBAI — Yemen’s Houthi rebels have warned that passenger aircraft flying through Saudi airspace could be targeted, as fighting intensifies following a Saudi-led military operation to retake areas controlled by the group.
The warning came as Saudi-backed Yemeni forces announced that they had recaptured the strategic port city of Mokha after heavy fighting. The city had been under Houthi control for about a month, according to the report.
Saudi-backed forces are also pushing towards areas near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key shipping route linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. The wider military operation is aimed at reclaiming territory held by the Houthis, including areas around the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, which has been under Houthi control since 2014.
The Yemeni government said Saudi aircraft were supporting its forces and claimed that hundreds of Houthi-linked military targets had been attacked. The developments add to concerns over security around the Red Sea and one of the world's important maritime routes.
