Student Protests Intensify Across France as Paris Rally Draws Thousands

PARIS — Student protests over France’s education system intensified on Tuesday, with a major rally planned in Paris. Around 40,000 students are expected to take part, according to reports. Demonstrations are also planned in 10 major cities, including Lyon and Marseille.

Students are demanding better school facilities, more teachers and improved learning conditions. They have also raised concerns about inequalities in education, particularly in disadvantaged areas, as well as long school hours and the condition of some school buildings. The protests began in the Paris region in mid-September and have since spread to cities and towns across France.

The demonstrations have also led to clashes between protesters and police, with more than 200 students reported injured. French authorities said more than 6,000 people had been detained by October 5, with most of those detained being minors. Police action, including the use of riot-control measures, has become a major point of controversy as the protests have grown.

A 15-year-old student suffered a serious hand injury during a police grenade incident, while other students have also been injured during the protests. French authorities have opened investigations into some incidents involving police. The government has called for the protests to remain peaceful and within the law, while teachers’ and labour organisations have announced support for the students’ mobilisation.
