THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — An IT professional originally from Tamil Nadu and living in the United States has been arrested in connection with more than 1,500 alleged hoax bomb threats across India, including more than 200 targeting institutions in Kerala, police said.
The suspect, identified as Sharath Subramanian, allegedly sent threatening emails from 2023 onwards to government offices, courts, airports, hotels and religious sites. In Thiruvananthapuram alone, around 40 fake threats were reportedly received. Targets included the Chief Minister’s official residence, the Secretariat, the district court, the Collectorate and major temples.
Investigators allege that the suspect used artificial intelligence to prepare the messages and followed media reports to monitor the disruption caused by the threats. The emails reportedly led to security searches and interrupted court proceedings on several occasions.
Tamil Nadu police arrested the suspect when he arrived at Chennai airport and later handed him over to Thiruvananthapuram City Police for further action in cases registered by the city’s cybercrime unit.
The allegations remain under investigation. Police have not announced a final conclusion on the full scale of the alleged campaign or all the circumstances surrounding it.
